Re: Optimizing the sound quality for the MT-32 and SC-8820

After the post yesterday, I couldn't help myself and decided to see how defined the difference would be. It turns out to be pretty minor, to my ears, but I also captured screenshots of spectrum analysis and "Loudness Analysis". I used ardour 5 on debian GNU/Linux to do the captures, and captured at ...

Re: Optimizing the sound quality for the MT-32 and SC-8820

Sorry to resurrect this for something that probably no one notices or cares about, but I'd forgotten to mention a possible (but hopefully inaudible/pedantic) issue I'd planned to circumvent myself, if recording the MT-32 or CM-64 with intended perfection. That is, the output impedance from those sou...

Re: MIDI rips of Konami's 1993 Sharp X68000 game, "Akumajō Dracula" for Roland MT-32/CM-32L/CM-64

Wow! Thanks for setting up those files!!! I haven't had a chance to try yet - very busy week at work. I can't wait to try this out over the weekend! You're welcome! The files have been helpful to me, and I hope they are for you too. It's a bit clunky to work in DOS, but at least it should allow you...

Re: MIDI rips of Konami's 1993 Sharp X68000 game, "Akumajō Dracula" for Roland MT-32/CM-32L/CM-64

Actually, I think your speed issues are with falcosoft's MIDI player. I had issues like you've described, while testing it, until I enabled the option to wait a bit between each song's playback (at least I think that was my solution). It's annoying Microsoft dropped support for selecting MIDI devic...

Re: MIDI rips of Konami's 1993 Sharp X68000 game, "Akumajō Dracula" for Roland MT-32/CM-32L/CM-64

That's interesting because I don't remember making changes other than culling certain tracks that were repeats between those releases. But I'm very glad you got it working and that you love the sound of these synthesizers as much as me. Yes, being true synthesizers, these modules can be coaxed to m...

Re: MIDI rips of Konami's 1993 Sharp X68000 game, "Akumajō Dracula" for Roland MT-32/CM-32L/CM-64

The problem was something much more foolish than my USB midi interface (although I did upgrade to Roland's solution - RIP Midisport Uno!)... as it turned out I was using the MT-32 set and not the CM-32 and 64 set. Now they sound amazing! I really need to get my hands on more X68000 stuff. I can't g...

Re: Chainsaw Monday

I've made a short documentary on Chainsaw Monday (available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gmyc6rPN04 ), the Major Layoffs at Sierra On-Line which happened 20 years ago, on February 22nd, 1999 in Oakhurst, CA and ultimately destroyed the company, albeit slowly and needing another set of layoff...

Re: MIDI rips of Konami's 1993 Sharp X68000 game, "Akumajō Dracula" for Roland MT-32/CM-32L/CM-64

Thanks so much for ripping these and the SYSex files! I'm having a bit of an issue getting proper playback on my CM-64 and my CM-32L using Falcosoft's midi player. No matter which of the SYSex files I load up the CM-64 plays improper instruments at times and the CM-32L won't play some of the channe...

Re: MIDI 2.0

Crazy stuff, but the MIDI Manufacturer's Association is prototyping a new evolution of the MIDI standard, dubbed MIDI 2.0. https://www.midi.org/articles/the-midi-manufacturers-association-mma-and-the-association-of-music-electronics-industry-amei-announce-midi-2-0tm-prototyping Very neat! I don't e...

Re: Optimizing the sound quality for the MT-32 and SC-8820

What do you mean by "unbalanced"? Professional audio often uses "balanced cables" to reduce interference in the cabling. The interface at each end must support it to get the benefit, though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balanced_audio Neither the MT-32 or the SC-8820 supports it. So I don't actual...
