I think what you're saying is to use the icons on the second row across the top. Those icons are just shortcuts to the same items in the text menu.

The icons are (left to right): Open Game, Close Game, Run Game, Print, New Resource, Open Resource, Import Resource, etc.
Selecting "Sounds" from the Open Resource menu is the same as going to the text menu and selecting Resource->Open Resource->Sound.
And the icon says "LOGI" by default. :) For "Logic."

And the Export Resource button (arrow to the old school 3.5" floppy disk) is the same as "Resource->Save As..."

It sounds like maybe I just need to try different copies of the game(s)? Except for KQ4 which I downloaded from the source you named, I got mine from a *different* archive.org link (https://archive.org/details/softwarelib ... e2gs_games) and while I've tested most of them to confirm they work, I get the aforementioned errors trying to open SNDDIR.

Unless I'm supposed to be opening some other file. You were never specific about which file is the right one to open.

Marten,

No, that's not what I'm saying. I would never patronise somebody like that!

What I did (from memory) is select "Import Game", and go to the folder that has the resources correctly named, I think "DATA" is the folder for the Apple IIGS games. I don't think I opened an individual file. If one were to do that, the resources are probably in VOL.* files, not sure if you can open a file like that though.

Then it loads a bunch of resources of various types, and there's a dropdown on the left that allows you to select which resource type to look at. Once you select "Sounds", it'll show the WAV and MIDI files in the game.

Try with Space Quest 2, since I had good luck with that one. How did you extract the files, was it CiderPress?
