I've long ago decided that real hardware is a safer bet for longevity, and combining that with the reality that Roland's hardware is the basis and standard for their SC-VA software, I doubt I'd ever consider differences in the SC-VA as improving on the hardware.

If all normalize does is amplify them both to a common decibel level, yes, there appears to be a muddier sound with SC-VA, as if a lowpass filter was applied. In my hardware recordings of the SC-8850, I found that too low a recording input level can cause similar effects, and I was only comparing one hardware recording to another.

I've read of differences between SC-VA and the real thing (on vogons.org, I guess). See these two posts for a couple examples I noted: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f= ... 60#p508718, https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f= ... 00#p525089

Thanks,

Lucas

Thank you for the links!

Yes, I think the digitizing from the analog output make only a little difference not this what you can hear in the comparsion.
Some difference a very subtile, but not so good to hear in the youtube video, because YT has a AAC datacompression in the most cases with 160 or 192 Kbit/s for audio.
In the Wallfive Dance Demo is the difference very high, with other sounds and patches only subtile

I have her a SC8850 to SC8820 comparsion, its very interesting! :)

You're welcome!

Yes, I bought an SC-8820 after the SC-8850 mainly because it can be USB-powered, was cheap enough, and others hold it in high regard. But in comparison, I dislike most of its patches. The SC-8850's santur always stands out wonderfully when it's used, as you've shown. The "zither 2" you mixed with it, compliments it nicely too. I haven't given the SC-8820 much of a chance yet, because I haven't needed the portability. Since I have both, I may as well use the one that usually sounds best to me. There was a certain "music box" (or similar sound, I don't remember exactly what) that I noticed was pleasingly more present on the SC-8820 in my testing. The SC-8850's stereo piano is noticeably nicer than the SC-8820's, and with program 1 piano so common among the midi files I've collected, I just tend to use the SC-8850.

Thanks,

Lucas
