22 years of SMC, KQ7 track released

Post by Spikey »

Hey folks,

Not exactly earth-shattering news to wake up to today. But for my 39th birthday, and the 22nd anniversary of Sierra Music Central, I recorded the first track I've recorded, edited and recorded digitally all, in a long time.

It's the main theme, "A Land Beyond Dreams" from King's Quest VII, played on the Roland Sound Canvas with minor alterations. If one listens in comparison, for example, to the QuestStudios version on SSV2, you can hear a couple of differences. I won't spoil them just yet though. It's not terribly exciting, but at least it's music, and may lead (finally!) to a proper KQ7 Soundtrack release of the in-game soundtrack, and maybe even a QuestStudios-style "Soundtrack CD/Digital Soundtrack" featuring the MT-32 and Sound Canvas, which I've always wanted to make and enjoy - I started one about 21 years ago but never finished it, can share some tracks if anyone wants, it was found again recently.

If I actually finish even the MIDI score - up to 20-odd tracks so far! - I will release it, although not as an old-style "Complete Soundtrack", but individual files). I'll also try to do some bonus tracks, such as the legions of unused and alternate music due to the game being rushed, similar to SQ6 - but in this case much less well-appreciated by the fans. They may not make the released MIDI score though.

If you just want to download and listen to the track in high quality MP3, visit my Google Drive here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wPjZ3S ... sp=sharing

Hi, Spikey!

Happy Birthday, and congratulations on the release; it sounds terrific! Here's hoping that more Sierra music will soon be forthcoming. ;)

Thanks my friend. Up to track 25, near the end of Chapter 2 currently. By my estimations, a "complete soundtrack" - not counting the unused, demo tracks etc - would be about 95 tracks! Albeit, they are a bit shorter on average loops than KQ6 for example, about 30-50 seconds instead of 1 minute or so each loop. Still, it's a lot.. Probably the same length as KQ6 again, 2 hours or so. Anyways, 25/95 (rough maths :P ) done so far, let's see how we go!

Goodness - I'm late to the party. I've recently visited the website more (I'll explain more in a little while with a posting to everyone here) and now just looked back on the forum. Happy (very) belated birthday! We all have been on here for aaaaaaages it seems... So glad you kept all of this alive after the Tom days..

Hey, DrJ! Good to see you again.

Thanks for the wishes, I haven't recorded anything since, got a bit busy in October, but got about 1/4 through the KQ7 "complete MIDI" soundtrack.

And yeah, I joined QS forums about 23 years ago. Feels weird to think of it like that.. You even longer.

Tom is still around, he posted something on YT the other day, but his Roland work is related to classic rock these days.

Yeah it's been a wild ride that's for sure!
I'm currently working on a Sierra project that I'm sure a lot of you will find very interesting. More on that in the near future.

@Spikey, have you ever been in contact with Mike Dana who did the soundtrack for LSL3?

Yes, it has been. And sounds exciting, would love to hear more!

And yes, I have. Mike is my "friend" on Facebook and he's a lovely guy who's still active in the (Fresno, CA) jazz community.
