Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 emulator

Post by Alderem »

While we've all been sleeping, emulation of the Sound Canvas has become a reality. Author nukeykt started working on it in 2021, and in three years with contributors helping it is convincingly close if not identical to the real hardware.

The original project can be found at https://github.com/nukeykt/Nuked-SC55

And the following fork adds support for many nice features, but you might be most interested in its ability to run multiple emulators in parallel and distribute MIDI between them, allowing for greater polyphony. https://github.com/linoshkmalayil/Nuked-SC55-GUI-Float/

Yes, it's cool what can be done these days, and it's good to have software and hardware both preserved like this.

Slightly frustratingly, they have not emulated the DAC stage - or provided an option for this - so it is sort of like a "digital SC-55", which is both good for theoretical greater quality, and bad for accuracy and potentially some coloration or warmth of the sound. Meaning, it will differ to the hardware, both the original and the mkII, effectively providing 4 different "original" SC-55 options (with yet further options in some original hardware, like the CM-300 which was an original SC-55 with higher quality DAC).
